CHAPTER TWENTY

Levy found out that Vinderrot was right about something. Connie had connected Apesk to the system of Portals between Seoph and Linnath. She could feel it now. Unfortunately, she couldn’t make an actual Portal to Linnath or Seoph. The distance she needed to cover was too far for her skill, but she figured that would change in time.

Vinderrot was not seen for a day, until he flew overhead as everyone was killing Lockfish. He swooped down and grabbed a level 39 traveler from Seoph and took off for a moment, gaining enough distance that they were too far for anyone to help. Vinderrot then killed the man and let his body fall.

This turned out to be just the beginning of his plan to stop anyone here from reaching level 40.

He came back many times every day, always killing another level 39 traveler while everyone was busy dealing with Lockfish. They tried to be ready for him, but the only way they could was to slow down the number that they pulled, which resulted in less experience and loot for everyone. Stasia tried to use Track continuously, but it took a lot of focus, and even when she did feel Vinderrot, often it was too late. He would fly into the fray and pick off one or two people. Or he’d land on the melee and burn three of them to death with Fire Stream before flying off. It didn’t matter how much damage he took. There was no way to kill him in the short time he needed to kill people.

Frustrations ran high. Some travelers from Seoph were already talking about how they wanted to retire once they reached level 40 and were back in Seoph. More wondered why Vinderrot hadn’t changed the system of mana here to make deaths permanent, speaking about it as if he could do so at any moment. For what Levy had felt when there was even a small change to the system of mana in Linnath, he assured everyone that he would be able to tell if Vinderrot changed anything as drastic as that. Besides, the amount of power it took to remove resurrections would surely weaken Vinderrot severely. They might then be able to kill him during one of his attacks.

After a couple months of Vinderrot killing just the higher-level travelers, almost everyone was the same level. They calculated that it was still better to go out and gain experience and loot even with Vinderrot killing them. At least this way they continued to earn Glory, and Tier 5 legendaries had become available in the shop now that the Rabbitmen clearly considered everyone favorably. No one wanted to waste their hard-earned Glory on Tier 4 items, but it was hard to be optimistic that they would ever reach Tier 5 on this island with Vinderrot always around.

Many had been critical of Connie, saying she should’ve waited until at least some people had reached level 40 before connecting this place to the system of Portals.
